Blackmore Vale half marathon

6th Feb 2005Road, measured half marathon
Venue: village hall in Bishops Caundle.
Travelling time: 1 hour
Weather: Cloudy, cold, but no wind - misty in hills.
Comments: Hard run, hills (some might say undulations) all the way round. Steep downhill from the start, with the foreboding that we had to run up it again at the end.
Age-groups: Up to v60 for men, v55 for ladies.
Results: Rosemarie won v55 category, in 1h:43m:10s
Alec had the sense not to compete, but provided support services as chauffeur.

Meon Valley Plod

13th Feb 200519.5 miles off-road
Venue: Clanfield (off A3).
Travelling time: 1 hour (lift with John and Chris Hunt, Alec stayed home)
Weather: Cold, very windy, wintry showers.Snowed just before start.
Comments: Arrived early, so avoided long queue for registration. Deep mud on much of route - too deep to run, could hardly lift feet out in places. Welcome cake and jelly-babies at water stations, free soup and drinks at end. Stayed with Chris to halfway (reliable pacemaker to stop me going too fast for my own good!). Caught in hailstorm, but luckily not till after exposed track over Butser Hill. Last couple of miles a real struggle (too little training for my ambitions). Bliss to sit at the end, and allow willing helpers to remove mud-encrusted trainers.
Results: Rosemarie 3h:44m:13s
Chris 3h:52m:02s
John 3h:04m:52s

Pewsey Terminator

27th Feb 200510+ miles MT
Venue: Pewsey sports centre.
Travelling time: 1 hour 15min; lift with Hunts, Alec stayed home again
Weather: Very cold, windy, sun + snow showers.
Comments: Start delayed 15mins for latecomers; very crowded for 1st bit.
Good run, more mud, and slippery (should have worn Fell-dancers).
Nice hot showers.
Free T-shirts, including small sizes!
Long wait for prize-giving.
Age-groups: Up to v60 for men, v55 for ladies.
Results: Rosemarie won cup for v55 category, in 1h:44m:11s
Chris 1h:58m:01s
John 1h:36m:54s

Mad March Hare 20

6th Mar 2005Road, 20 miles
Venue: Burton scout hut
Travelling time: 10 mins
Weather: Frosty, cold, sunny, north wind.
Comments: Long loo queues.
Tried for average 8:15 pace, but not enough training. Ran with Neil R to halfway, then he went on, while I slowed and ran out of energy at 17 miles (Gatorade in hand-bottle not enough, should have taken some jelly-babies, as only water provided en-route).
Alec didn't fancy racing so far, over such familiar territory.
Age-groups: n/a (prizes to 1st 3 gents and ladies only).
Results: Rosemarie 2h:47m:00s (p.b. since never done 20 mile race before)

Coniston 14

19th Mar 2005Road, measured 14 miles
Venue: John Ruskin School, Coniston.
Travelling time: 6-7 hours to Lake District (depending on traffic)
We stayed nearby, in the Howgill fells, at the Black Swan hotel in Ravenstonedale. It's normally under an hour from Coniston, but there was a lot of race-traffic.
Easy parking in school field.
Weather: Mist/cloud am, sun pm. No wind, warm.
Comments: Large event (1500 entries).
Stiff competition from fit northern fell-running types.
Just follow the road all the way round the lake - no short cut back unless you hire a boat. It's hilly all the way, starting with the climb out of the village, but the longest hill comes after about 11 miles, when the legs are already protesting at over-exertion.
Age-groups: Excellent prize list, 3 in each 5-year category
Up to v70 for men (to Alec's delight), v60 for ladies.
Also prize for all finishers in mv70+ and lv60+ age groups.
Results: Rosemarie 3rd v55, in 1h:53m:47s
Alec 2nd v70, in 2h:16m:44s

Isle-of-Wight 3 Hills

28th Mar 2005Easter Monday. MT, approx 8 miles
Venue: Freshwater sports centre.
Travelling time: Took bike in car to Lymington for 9:45am ferry to Yarmouth
Cycled across to Freshwater - about 3 miles, flattest route is on old railway track.
Weather: Mist/sun. Warm until mist came down again.
Comments: Under 100 runners this year (because Easter was so early?)
New start in field, twice round before going on to road.
Very scenic when the mist allowed, but surely counted more than 3 hills. Hardest was climbing up from Alum Bay (hands-on-knees walk), then up over Tennyson Down.
Age-groups: Up to v70 for men, v55 for ladies.
Results: Rosemarie won voucher for 1st v55, in 1h:08m:49s

Chedworth Roman Trail

3rd Apr 2005MT, approx 10 miles (nearer 11)
Venue: Chedworth village hall (6 miles north of Cirencester).
Travelling time: 2 hours (John and Chris Hunt came with us)
Car park half mile from start.
Weather: Mist am/sun pm.
Comments: Hilly - it's in the Cotswolds after all.
Slight changes to course from last time - sure they put in an extra hill.
Mostly firm tracks (OK for road shoes) except for river crossing and muddy bridle path.
Age-groups: Up to v60 for men, v55 for ladies.
Results:
65 John 1h:20m:02s
171 Rosemarie 1h:30m:41s (1st v55)
228 Chris 1h:37m:30s
284 Alec 1h:47m:36s
(out of 315 finishers).

Venue: Fordingbridge firestation.
Travelling time: 30 mins
Use main town car park (pay-and-display, even on Sundays).
Weather: Very warm, humid.
Comments: "Undulating" - but I counted at least 2 hills.
Mostly country lanes - last bit on Fordingbridge/Sandleheath road.
Age-groups: Only 1st 3 men and women, plus 1st v50 man and woman.
Results:
Rosemarie 1st v50, in 47m 09s (100th out of 347 finishers)
Very little info on results list - just overall position, surname and time.

Blandford Bridges Run

12th Jun 200510k, MT, hilly
Venue: Blandford leisure centre.
Travelling time: 45 mins
Weather: Warm, sunny.
Comments: Mainly tarmac. Start/finish round playing field; down high street, and a lot of around-the-houses, including long, hot uphill. Downhill finish.
Age-groups: Up to v60 for men, v55 for ladies
Results:
Rosemarie 1st v55, in 47m 49s (53rd out of 175 finishers)
Online results list hard to read - no column separation.

25th Jun 200518-ish (or 22) miles, MT, very hilly
Venue: Hook and Parrot, Seaton (Devon)
Travelling time: 2hrs(+/-15mins)
Weather: Warm, humid, cloudy.
Comments: 5 pubs + cream tea fun run.
Advised not to do extra 4-mile loop, as route markings washed away in storms.
Legs suffered on downhills - very stiff next day.
Age-groups: n/a
Results:
About 4 hours. All finished in more-or-less inebriated state.

Venue: Portland.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins

Comments: 2 circuits: 3 miles, down hill and back up to start, then 7 miles, all the way down to the lighthouse and back up.

Results:
144Rosemarie1h:18m:59s (1st v55)

(out of 294 finishers).

New Forest Alternative 10

9th Jul 200510 miles, road/track
Venue: New Park Farm, Brockenhurst.
Travelling time: 30 mins (hold-up in Lyndhurst).
Weather: Hot, humid.
Comments: Saturday evening pre-NF10 club championship.
Worst 10-mile time for years (excuses due to heat and lame left leg)
Age-groups: 1st/2nd/3rd in 10-year groups (40/50/60/70).
Results:
Rosemarie 1st v50, in 1hr:21m:46s

Doone Run

18th Sep 200511.5 miles, off-road, hills
Venue: Lynton, Devon.
Travelling time: about 3 hours.
Weather: Cloudy, warm.
Comments: The most scenic hilly run we know and love (our 6th time).
Weekend camping as usual at 'Sunny Lyn' site.
Woe is me - left leg still not working properly, so had to walk all up-hills and last 1.5 miles.
Age-groups: Up to MV60, FV55
Results:
7 NFR runners - Chris Hunt got 1st v55.
Rosemarie worst time ever (not even worth noting!)
Alec got 'oldest finisher' bottle of bubbly.

Argentan half-marathon

1st Oct 2005Mainly road, undulating, one long hill on trail thru forest.
Venue: Argentan, France.
Travelling time: Hitched a lift on Egdon Heath Runners minibus again.
Ferry Portsmouth-Caen, then about 1 hour drive south.
Weather: Warm in sun, sharp showers, windy.
Comments: Our 2nd visit. Joined by Chris and John, and Maggie and Bruce.
Same format weekend as last year - excellent 5-course pasta party friday evening, race saturday pm, dinner/dance in evening.
My left leg felt slightly stronger; managed to finish race, treating it as 4 x 5k, with a walk to recover at each drink station.
Nice black running tops for finishers - a shame they only had extremely petite for the ladies, and extra large for the gents. And the shorts to go with them were all enormous!!!
Age-groups: 10-year groups both M and F
But calculated on age next year, so I was V3 (60-69)
Results:
203 John 1h:34m:18s
420Bruce 1h:42m:37s
611 Maggie 1h:50m:05s
659 Rosemarie 1h:52m:13s (2nd v60)worst ever time!

798 Alec 2h:00m:32s
(out of 921 finishers).

Comments: Poured with rain on way there, but eased off before start.

Age-groups: Up to MV60, FV60
Results:
Several NFR runners there - Chris Hunt got 1st v60.
